How to Measure Your Face

Have you ever wondered why hair models or anybody you know carry a style that just looks custom made? It all begins with assessing your face shape. Once established, it can help you and your stylist choose the most flattering style. There are four basic face shapes: oval, round, heart, and square. Other shapes include: triangle/pear, diamond, and rectangle/oblong.

Tools Needed:
A mirror, pencil/pen, paper and measuring tape

How to measure your face (make sure to write your measurements):

1. First, measure across the top of your cheekbones.
2. Then measure across your jawbone, from widest point to widest point (width)
3. Third, measure across your forehead at the widest point (somewhere between your eyes and hairline)
4. Measure from the top of your face (at the hairline) to the tip of your chin (length)

Now that you have these four numbers you can determine which face shape you fall into:

Oval Shaped:
You have an oval face if the length is 1 1/2 times the width and all features are evenly balanced and proportioned. Oval faces usually have small features and prominent cheekbones.

Round Shaped:
Your face is just as wide at the cheekbones as it is long. Yet, your forehead and jawline are slightly narrower.

Square Shaped:
All four measurements will be roughly the same. However, the shape is more angular and about as wide as it is long.

Heart shaped:
The face is widest at the forehead or cheekbones and taper down to a narrower jaw.

Diamond Shaped:
This shape is similar to the oval shape, except that it has very prominent cheekbones. While the jaw and forehead may be close in measurements.

Triangle Shaped (aka Pear Shaped ):
Your face is widest at the jaw and more narrow at the cheekbones and forehead.

Rectangle Shaped:
Rectangle faces are like the square but the length is slightly longer than the width.

Home Hair Coloring: Tips on How to Reduce Your Anxiety and Increase Your Confidence

We take pride on being self-sufficient. In fact, as parents we encourage our children to be independent from a very early age. Do-It-Yourself (DIY) projects are increasingly becoming  more and more like a staple for cautious spending. As a colorist, I do not condemn the use of store bought color. I believe people have needs and sometimes their resources cannot fully meet them. Another driving force to an increase in DIY home coloring, is today's economy and the Covid-19 Pandemic. Many men and women are finding very difficult to see their stylists on a regular basis, so they take the DIY challenge to save money and time. However, with any undertaken challenge comes a mixture of emotions. Going to a drug store to choose the perfect hair color shade can be a very daunting experience. The biggest obstacle for women (and men) is choosing the right shade. Manufacturers do a fantastic campaign job ( with high profile mo...

What It Means To Be A Master Hairdresser

“If people knew how hard I worked to get my mastery, it wouldn’t seem so wonderful at all” Michelangelo Instant mastery of hairdressing skills is something we all like to achieve as soon as we complete beauty school. Wait, not so fast! The reality is that the road ahead can be demanding and laborious. Becoming a master hairdresser requires humility, patience and hard work. Like any other field, hairdressing has its specialties (color and hairstyling) and sub specialties (keratin, texture hair, sessions, updo, etc.). It gives us ample choices to select an area to master. It's been tested and tried, no matter the field, that time and practice leads to expertise. No matter where you are, it takes at least two years of preparation to be a good hairdresser and six years and above to be great or achieve mastery. No matter how skillful you may think you are, the more you learn the greater you’ll be. Albert Einstein once said “Only one who devote...
