How to Choose the Perfect Haircut for Your Face Shape & Features

How does your face shape affect your haircut? Simply said, the right haircut can enhance any feature you love or minimize those you loathe. It's not only a matter of having the perfect haircut, it's a matter of perfecting the cut around your shape. Perfecting the cut, results in a beautiful, balanced and geometric shape that brings out your most beautiful features. Now let's review what haircuts are most flattering to your shape and features:

Oval Face:
As you all know (because you read it or heard it a million times) oval is the most versatile face shape and the most admired. I, on the other hand, believe all face shapes are worthy of admiration. With that said, if you have an oval face, you do not need to worry about what cut or styles fit you best. Experts all agree that you can wear just about anything. Just check out those celebrities like Tyra Banks, Jessica Alba and Cindy Crawford for inspiration.

LONG Face/Oblong: The goal is to add width to minimize length. Celebrity Shape: Liv Tyler & Sarah Jessica Parker

Hair should be angled 1-2 inches below the cheekbones. Layers should not be cut too far below the collarbone. This precaution will prevent the face from appearing too long. The most flattering length is 1 inch below the collarbone. Bangs should be long, angled and blended to one side. A sophisticated tousled look is also flattering. What works for your long face type? Several. Here are some examples:

1. If you have straight hair, you can create more width with bangs. Bangs make your face appear shorter because they cover up a particularly large forehead. Shy away from blunt bangs and go for side swept bangs.

2. Chin-length bobs and cuts are also ideal for you because they create the illusion of width.

3. Curls and waves also add width, but avoid short layers that add volume on top.
Stay away from extremely long or short cuts. These elongate your face. The bob should end at the jaw, chin or cheekbones to show off bone structure. The best bobs are shorter in the back and angle down to the front.

Round Face: The goal is to add length with height and avoid width. Celebrity shape:Renée Zellweger, Michelle Williams

The last thing you want to do if you have a round face is add fullness to the sides of your head. If you have curly hair, cut in layers to weigh it down and make sure to grow it a couple inches or more below your chin. The extra length will elongate your round face. Layers are universally flattering on everyone and are prefect choice for women with round faces because they also help to elongate your faces. Layered haircuts ending by the chin can mask roundness while elongating your face.

Square Shape: The goal is to soften your strong jawline. If you have a square face, consider yourself lucky. Some of the most famous faces in the past and today have a strong, angular jawline. Look for  Salma Hayek, Sandra Bullock and Demi Moore for inspiration.

Tapered bobs angled into the jawline with side swept bangs, will soften your shape. Long layers complement your face. Long layers are especially great paired with side swept bangs. Layers should begin at the jawline and continue downward. If you have curly hair, try to keep the length below the jawline. Curly hair tends to frizz up when too short and a longer cut weighs down the curls so they're less "poofy." Texture, in the form of curls or choppy/wispy , is a great look for square faces.

avoid blunt-cut bangs, which can emphasize an already-broad forehead and chin.

Heart Shape:  The goal is to create length around the shape and width around the chin.
Any textured chin-length hairstyles will suit best. Check out Reese Witherspoon, Cristina Ricci, Jennifer Love Hewitt for inspiration.

If you are thinking about fringe, think side-swept not straight across. Blunt fringes will only make your face shape shorter and wider.

Shoulder length cuts with wispy layers that are subtly flipped out will also work very well. Long, side swept bangs, blunt bangs, long hair, chin-length bob and shoulder-length hair.

Triangular Shaped (aka Pear Shape): The goal is to narrow your chin and widen your forehead.

Styles that are full at the temple and taper at the jaw are perfect for your face shape. Off center parts done with diagonal lines draw attention to your beautiful eyes. If long hair is what attracts you, make sure you style your hair with soft waves. Check  Fantasia, Kathy Ireland and Minnie Rogers as references.

Diamond Shaped:The goal to balance a narrow chin, minimize wider cheek bones and shorten the overall length. Check out Scarlett Johansson, Kate Bosworth, Linda Evangelista. They all have diamond face shape.

The best hairstyles for you are those that add width at the chin area. Chin length or shoulder length bobs with wispy flipped out looks are great for you as they add width to your chin. Styles that are tucked in behind the ears also work well because they draw attention to your beautiful cheek bone structure. Fringes are okay to use with your shape because they help to shorten your length.

Prominent Jaw Line:
If you have a prominent jaw line (triangular shape), hair should be angled along the cheekbones. The most flattering length is 2-3 inches below the jaw line. Bangs should be long, angled and blended to one side. A sophisticated tousled look is also flattering.

High Forehead & Round Face:
Strong horizontal or heavy bangs, just below the eyebrows, will contour your face into a less full or round face. Layers should start below the jaw line and end by the collarbone.

Full forehead, long chin:
If your forehead is large and your chin long, it can help to add volume below the chin line to balance it out. A thick layered cut or mid-length bob will add fullness where it's needed. Bangs can also reduce the look of a full forehead.

Large Nose:
Full hair can help minimize and balance a large nose. Avoid straight hair, parted down the middle and long heavy fringe. As they will make a larger nose seem even more prominent. Also, a full hairstyle or up swept crown makes the nose less noticeable.

Short neck:
To create the appearance of length, choose a haircut that's tapered on the base of the neck. The top, however, should be fuller.

Face Too Round:
If your face is too round, putting a side part can slim and lengthen your face.

Thin Face:
Curls and waves, specially on the sides, will widen your thin face.

Sharp, Angular Features:
A wavy or curly hairstyle will soften a chiseled cheekbone, nose or jaw.

Strong or Square Chin:
A short cut with soft curls or fullness at the crown, takes attention away from the chin.
Narrow Chin:-
Long hair with fullness at the chin will balance a narrow chin.
Low Forehead:-
Vertical lines and soft fullness at the crown can lengthen the face.

Home Hair Coloring: Tips on How to Reduce Your Anxiety and Increase Your Confidence

We take pride on being self-sufficient. In fact, as parents we encourage our children to be independent from a very early age. Do-It-Yourself (DIY) projects are increasingly becoming  more and more like a staple for cautious spending. As a colorist, I do not condemn the use of store bought color. I believe people have needs and sometimes their resources cannot fully meet them. Another driving force to an increase in DIY home coloring, is today's economy and the Covid-19 Pandemic. Many men and women are finding very difficult to see their stylists on a regular basis, so they take the DIY challenge to save money and time. However, with any undertaken challenge comes a mixture of emotions. Going to a drug store to choose the perfect hair color shade can be a very daunting experience. The biggest obstacle for women (and men) is choosing the right shade. Manufacturers do a fantastic campaign job ( with high profile models and actresses) to allure consumers to believe that home

What It Means To Be A Master Hairdresser

“If people knew how hard I worked to get my mastery, it wouldn’t seem so wonderful at all” Michelangelo Instant mastery of hairdressing skills is something we all like to achieve as soon as we complete beauty school. Wait, not so fast! The reality is that the road ahead can be demanding and laborious. Becoming a master hairdresser requires humility, patience and hard work. Like any other field, hairdressing has its specialties (color and hairstyling) and sub specialties (keratin, texture hair, sessions, updo, etc.). It gives us ample choices to select an area to master. It's been tested and tried, no matter the field, that time and practice leads to expertise. No matter where you are, it takes at least two years of preparation to be a good hairdresser and six years and above to be great or achieve mastery. No matter how skillful you may think you are, the more you learn the greater you’ll be. Albert Einstein once said “Only one who devotes himself to a
